There are many different types of braces that provide effective teeth straightening, but many of them are more visible than many adults would prefer. Fortunately, there are several options that aren’t as obvious as traditional metal braces.
What are Ceramic Braces?
Ceramic braces are one of these less-visible options. Ceramic braces are made from composite materials with varying levels of transparency. This allows them to take on the natural color of the teeth they’re placed on. Many adult braces are ceramic because they blend in with the natural color of the tooth and they don’t stain. Usually ceramic brackets will be complemented by either white metal ties or elastic ties so they look less conspicuous. Though metal will straighten teeth faster, the white coating tends to wear off over time.
Advantages of Ceramic Brackets
Most people choose ceramic for the look. The brackets blend into your teeth and are much less visible than metal. Food will never stain the brackets, though it may stain the clear elastic wires holding them together. Still, since these ties are changed on a monthly basis, it won’t really matter. Ceramic can give you the confidence to keep smiling while your teeth are being straightened, and they’re fairly easy to clean.
Disadvantages of Ceramic Brackets
Ceramic can be a little more brittle than metal, so abuse or shock may damage them more easily. They may break, chip, wear down or fracture, so it’s important to be careful when chewing food. The average cost of braces made of ceramic is often higher than the cost for metal braces as well. You’ll have to visit the orthodontist more often and the materials cost more to procure.
If you want straight teeth but dislike the appearance of braces, then ceramic braces are probably the way to go. Talk to your orthodontist to see if this option is right for your treatment.
