A Better Smile Can Improve Your Social Anxiety

Having a nice smile is one of the many issues at the forefront of an individual’s consciousness. And because your smile takes up much of your face, many people feel embarrassed about the condition of their teeth. It is natural to feel this way. And why would they not? Your smile is one of the first features you see on a person’s face. However, advertising probably does not help an individual’s confidence with its exaggerated, “cartoon” white teeth.

Advertising is not the only hot poker in an individual’s opinion on teeth. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry led a study and discovered an overwhelming number of adults, 99.7 percent to be specific, believe a healthy smile is important to one’s social life. More importantly, the same group led another study and found similar conclusions but in the field of careers, almost three-quarters, 74 percent to specific, of adults agree that the success of your career can take a hit if your smile is unattractive.

It goes as far as to change an individual’s behavior just to hide their teeth. A survey was conducted in 2015, and respondents had much to say. In a single year, 25 percent of respondents lessened the amount they smiled; 23 percent felt embarrassed of the state of their teeth; 20 percent felt the cold chill of anxiety while 14 percent just outright lessened their presence in social functions.

Numbers like those have a stake in yet another study led by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, when it was calculated Americans collectively spend $2.75 billion on cosmetic dental work. The results also showed that two out of every three patients were women, while the remaining one out of three were men.

For those unsure of what to do, and really want to fix their smile, seek the help of cosmetic dental treatments. Opting to improve your dental care and choosing suitable cosmetic dental treatments can clearly improve one’s self-confidence, perhaps even drive away the social anxiety many feel an unattractive smile does.

Need your teeth whitened? The bleach used in dentistry can do that! Are you teeth crooked or crowded? Braces have been an invaluable tool in correcting this. How about a cover of sorts like veneers? Regardless of which cosmetic dental treatments you choose, it should be noted that the first step to improving your smile is taking care of them. Oftentimes you will be instructed to improve the health of your teeth before any procedure can be done, the gums being the number one target. Then you’ll be on your way to a better, and more confident smile!
